A courtyard lies between me
and what I’d like to hold.
It is all bare stones and dried leaves
that crackle like fire,
but it is impossible to cross,
to leave behind.
I take a step
and erase it with each breath,
unwinding any progress
with thoughts pulling back
like broken spools.
